Understanding Otoplasty in Maryland

Dr. Adam Tattelbaum provides comprehensive otoplasty procedures for patients throughout Maryland, Northern Virginia, and Washington DC from his offices in Rockville, MD, and McLean, VA.

What is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is a specialized procedure designed to modify the appearance, shape, and position of the ears. This surgical intervention can address various ear-related concerns, helping patients achieve a more balanced and confident aesthetic.

Otoplasty Procedure Options

  • Ear Reconstruction: Addressing underdeveloped or traumatically injured ears
  • Ear Reduction: Minimizing large or prominent ear structures
  • Ear Pinning: Reducing the distance between ears and the head
  • Earlobe Surgery: Correcting specific earlobe concerns

Surgical Technique

During the procedure, Dr. Tattelbaum carefully places incisions behind the ear, exposing the cartilage framework. The cartilage is then reshaped through precise techniques including scoring, suturing, and selective removal to achieve the desired ear configuration.

Ideal Candidates for Otoplasty

Otoplasty is suitable for individuals with various ear-related concerns, including:

  • Large or protruding ears
  • Enlarged earlobes
  • Congenital ear deformities
  • Asymmetrical ear structures

Recovery and Expectations

Typical otoplasty recovery takes several weeks. Patients can usually resume normal activities within a few days, though complete healing may take up to six weeks. Temporary swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort are common during the initial recovery period.

Potential Risks and Considerations

While otoplasty is generally safe, potential risks include infection, blood clots, and rare instances of overcorrection. Dr. Tattelbaum thoroughly discusses these considerations during the initial consultation to ensure patient understanding and comfort.

Professional Expertise

As a double board-certified plastic surgeon and member of prestigious medical societies, Dr. Adam Tattelbaum brings extensive experience and precision to every otoplasty procedure.

Dr.Tattelbaum was excellent start to finish! He took the time to perform the consultation, which was a first for me while shopping around for doctors. He was very personable, approachable and listened to me when describing my goal. The day of my procedure, Doctor and staff kept me reassured and excited! A month and a half into my breast augmentation and I couldn’t be happier. He is truly fantastic!

I could have sworn I wrote a review but I don't see it. Well better late than never. I had a fleur de lis and breast lift/reduction almost a year ago and my experience was fantastic. From beginning to end, I felt well cared for. I have zero complaints. I also had a recent GYN appointment and my GYN was extremely complimentary of the work that was done, stating it was the best she had ever seen and asked for Dr. Tattelbaum's name and number so she could refer him to her other clients. I was happy to give it to her. Thanks for a wonderful experience. Highly recommend.

The bed manners are fine. But - I am Very unhappy with the results. Scars are very visible even after 18 months.

Dr. Tattlebaum is amazing. He's kind, has a wonderful bedside manner, and really thorough in his explanations. I never felt like I didn't have guidance on what to expect. I've never had surgery before so he made me feel very comfortable and safe. I highly recommend!!

I don’t really do reviews but Dr. Tattlebaum deserves more than this many reviews but I get it, he’s a “if you know you know” type of doctor. I went to him for my first breast augmentation 9 years ago when I was 22. About a week ago, I gotten a breast exchange going a bit larger than before and lipo for my abdominal and flanks. He is the most caring freaking doctor and I can’t say this enough but I LOVE HIM! Before going under, he literally had his hand on my wrist to just support me. Now what doctors do you know does that? He is so professional at all times, so caring, precise, a perfectionist with his work. He is not about his money, so he will tell you he won’t do a certain procedure if you don’t need it or will make you look crazy. All of my referrals love him and love their results.
