Understanding Labiaplasty: A Comprehensive Overview

Many women experience concerns about the size and shape of their labia, which can impact personal comfort and confidence. Labiaplasty is a specialized surgical procedure designed to address these intimate anatomical concerns. Plastic surgeon Dr. Alex Mesbahi offers expert vaginal rejuvenation surgery in McLean, VA to help women achieve a more natural and comfortable appearance.

What is Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces the size of the labia minora and/or majora. This technique can be performed due to various factors, including:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Changes from pregnancy and childbirth
  • Physical trauma
  • Cosmetic and functional concerns

Benefits of Labiaplasty

Patients may experience multiple advantages from this procedure, such as:

  • Reduced physical discomfort during activities
  • Improved personal hygiene
  • Enhanced sexual confidence
  • Elimination of irritation from excess tissue

Procedure Details

Mesbahi Plastic Surgery performs labiaplasty under local or general anesthesia, depending on individual patient needs. The surgical technique typically takes approximately 30 minutes, with Dr. Mesbahi carefully removing excess tissue and reshaping the labia to achieve a natural, symmetrical appearance.

Recovery and Expectations

Patients can expect mild swelling and discomfort for approximately one week following the procedure. Complete healing occurs around six months, with initial improvements visible within six weeks. Dr. Mesbahi recommends avoiding sexual activity and tampons for 4-6 weeks to ensure optimal healing.

Candidate Considerations

Ideal candidates for labiaplasty include women who:

  • Experience physical discomfort
  • Feel self-conscious about labial appearance
  • Have completed childbearing
  • Are in good overall health

Safety and Expertise

As a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Mesbahi prioritizes patient safety and aesthetic outcomes. The procedure is designed to minimize scarring and preserve sensitivity, focusing on natural-looking results.

*Specifically to alert breast cancer patients, please ignore if otherwise* First I would like to state that the Nurse Practitioners, PA-C's, and assistants employed by Dr. Mesbahi are wonderful, first rate, and caring ladies and all deserve 5 star reviews. I first required surgery for breast cancer on Aug 2, 2022. My breast surgeon (who is amazing) worked with Dr. Mesbahi so I had no choice on who my plastic surgeon was. As I was having a double mastectomy with implants (or the goal of implants with expanders if necessary), I was initially concerned about rippling with my implants. I was told that this would not be a concern. Not having delt with too many providers prior, I trusted it and eventually proceeded with the surgery. I luckily went direct to implant. After surgery, sure enough, if my shoulders came forward, my breast implants had rippling like you'd see with sand in the desert. I was initially annoyed because no one wants to keep having surgery but gave the doctor the benefit of the doubt. I needed to wait a year for them to be revised due to donor nerves being placed. I was then given more "cohesive" Naturelle implants that had almost zero rippling (couldn't have given me these before?), and all was well. Unfortunately, in March of 2025, I got cancer a second time on my right side. There was a concern that I would need radiation. I have been very vocal about being against radiation for personal reasons since I have seen the late stage effects of it with family members. I had discussed this with my oncologist, my breast surgeon, Dr. Mesbahi, and his NP, so it was in their documentation. I had made this very clear to everyone, and choosing not to do radiation is my decision. The implant needed to be replaced due to proximity to the cancer, and it was discussed that I again may either need an expander or go direct to implant, and I wouldn't know until after surgery as prior. No surprises there. What I should have asked and had just assumed with the phrase "swapping out the implant", and what you should ask as a patient, is if the doctor plans on putting the SAME SIZE implant in. If he had discussed this with me prior, I would have at least appreciated this discussion even though I would have pushed back on it. It was not discussed because I had assumed he would put in the same size. I found out from my husband after surgery that Dr. Mesbahi told him that he had put in a LARGER implant on that side in anticipation for radiation. I can't tell you how absolutely ignored and invalidated I felt in that moment. My husband knew before I did. I looked in the mirror and the implant is larger and firmer than my left side since my skin is getting acclimated to the new size, and I've been extremely upset for an entire week post op. Supposedly Dr. Mesbahi's family member had cancer and I thought he'd be more considerate of me. I can't help but come to the conclusion Dr. Mesbahi thought I would get over my concerns and go through with radiation or that he just wants to keep running insurance so he can do more surgeries. I'm tired of being cut into, and I want him to fix it. I want the same size implant as the other side, and after this surgery I am never letting a scalpel handled by this doctor touch me again. I wonder if the skin on that side will look the same now after its been stretched. If I was listened to the first time, I would only need 2 surgeries instead of 4. TLDR: Ladies, if you have breast cancer, your desires and concerns will come second with Dr. Mesbahi. If you can, save yourselves the additional emotional and physical pain you're going through besides everything else you are dealing with and go elsewhere to someone who will listen to you and discuss all outcomes.
