Ear Pinning Surgery (Otoplasty) in Austin, TX

Understanding Otoplasty: Ear Reshaping Procedure

Otoplasty is a specialized surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of prominent or protruding ears. Typically performed on patients as young as six years old, this procedure addresses ear shape concerns that can impact self-confidence.

Common Ear Shape Concerns

Prominent ears often result from two primary structural issues:

  • Lack of antihelix fold, creating a "lop ear" appearance
  • Large or significantly angled conchal bowl

Surgical Approach

Louis William Apostolakis M.D. uses advanced suturing techniques to reshape ear cartilage carefully. The goal is to create a natural ear contour while avoiding potential deformities like "broken ear" or "telephone ear" appearance.

Procedure Details

  • Cost Range: $4,500 – $5,500
  • Anesthesia Options:
    • Local anesthesia
    • Local anesthesia with sedation
    • Local anesthesia with optional "valium" pill
  • Incision Location: Behind the ears, within natural creases

Recovery and Expectations

Otoplasty recovery is typically straightforward with minimal disruption to daily activities:

  • 24 hours until public exposure
  • 1-2 weeks for ears to approach normal appearance
  • Minimal bruising and pain
  • Head bandage worn for initial 24 hours

Potential Risks

Risks associated with otoplasty are minimal and include:

  • Potential infection
  • Rare instances of suture splitting
  • Minimal risk of ear shape reversal

Patient Considerations

Dr. Apostolakis emphasizes patient-centered care, discouraging parents from pressuring children who are not concerned about their ear appearance. The procedure is most successful when patients genuinely desire the change.

I had consultations with three different plastic surgeons but Dr. Apostolakis was the most thorough in his assessment and approach for reaching my desired results. I had not thought of including an eyebrow lift with my facelift but I'm so thankful I did! A year later I am so happy with my results. The timeline for recovery and expectations after 3,6, 9 month intervals was just as Dr. Apostolakis explained. The staff was so knowledgeable , respectful and kind in helping me feel comfortable throughout the process. Should I decide on any future procedures I will definitely use this practice again. Paula S

I had tear trough implants done by Dr. Apostolakis in October 2024. I am absolutely thrilled with the results. I don’t look tired anymore and no one has said to me “You look tired”, which was an almost daily occurrence before the procedure. Dr. Apostolakis and his entire staff are wonderful and I am definitely planning on coming back in the future when needed.

Dr. Apostolakis and his team made me feel very comfortable and in safe and talented hands! I came in for one procedure and they never tried to sell me on anything else. I also have great respect for the pricing transparency on the website, it was exactly what was there and not a dollar more for everything. Thank you to Dr. Apostolakis and his team!!!

I do not recommend. In 2022 I had implants put in under my eyes. The day after the surgery it looked as if there was a worm under my eye. I took a picture of it and sent it to him. He said I needed to come in right away Because that was the implant, the implant moved. A year later, I went in for a facelift. From the beginning, it all started off bad. No one there was able to get the IV in and you can tell Dr. A was getting frustrated. He then asked for a pillow, put it under my arm and shove the needle into my vein, which blood actually sprayed out, and the pillowcase was soaked with blood. after four months , I told him my jowls were still there. And that one of my eyes look bigger than the other. He told me to give it a couple more months. A few more months went by. I kept telling him about my concerns. He said he was happy with the results. I then started going for consultations with other cosmetic surgeons. Two that actually work on the same street he does. One of them told me they would only been 85% happy with my under eye outcome. They both told me I needed a full face revision, the skin the muscle. They both stated I had a lot of laxity around my jawbone and my neck. They stated I have pixie ears. And one even stated that the scar in front of my ears should’ve been a lot closer to my ears. I even posted pictures on RealSelf. I had a total of about 10 different cosmetic surgeon tell me I needed a whole revision. And about how much laxity I still had Around my jowls and neck. I was told the pixie ears are a sign of poor technique and judgement. I also have a sweep deformity on the sides of my face Due to the fact, he was unable to reposition my jowls without creating a sweep deformity. Also a closure with less tension at the earlobes would improve the pixie ear deformity. Another doctor said he always recommends going back to the surgeon who did the work he said, but this time in my case he does not recommend me going back So two years after the eye surgery and one year later from the facelift, Dr A was going to fix the fat under one of the eyes to make it look better. And just do the skin and not the muscle to a revision facelift. Of course I would have to come out of pocket for facility and anesthesiologist fee. I decided not to have him do my face. As I did not want him to ruin my face anymore then he already has. I Have never been so stressed out and depressed as I have been in the past year. The last time I called up to Dr A’s office about him fixing the under eye, I told the receptionist that I started seeing a psychiatrist for about four months now, Because of this situation. I received a call back and was told never Contact them again. I did at one point ask for at least half my money back, that did not happen. And I can’t afford to get a revision. Also with the implants under my eye’s I am not able to get filler put in for the hollowness.
