Understanding Otoplasty: Ear Correction Surgery

Otoplasty, or ear surgery, is a specialized procedure designed to improve the shape, position, and proportion of the ears. This surgical technique can address congenital ear defects, correct misshapen ears caused by injury, and create a more natural, balanced appearance.

Goals of Ear Reshaping Surgery

  • Achieve normally shaped and symmetric ears
  • Enhance self-confidence through improved ear aesthetics
  • Correct structural ear abnormalities

Who is a Good Candidate for Otoplasty?

  • Individuals uncomfortable with their ear appearance
  • Men or women with protruding ears
  • Patients with congenital ear deformities or post-injury ear irregularities

The Otoplasty Procedure in Salisbury, MD

Peninsula Plastic Surgery offers comprehensive otoplasty services tailored to each patient's unique needs. The procedure typically takes 1-2 hours and can be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the patient's age and preference.

Surgical Approach

For adult patients, the procedure is usually performed in-office with local anesthesia. Surgical techniques may include reshaping ear cartilage, pinning ears back, or refining ear contours. A protective head wrap is applied post-surgery to support healing.

Recovery and Aftercare

Most patients return home the same day of the procedure. Initial recovery involves managing discomfort with oral medication, using ice packs, and maintaining a elevated head position during sleep. Patients can typically return to work or school within 7-10 days.

What to Expect During Recovery

  • Oral antibiotics for approximately five days
  • Head wrap removal during first post-operative visit
  • Gradual reduction of swelling and bruising over 2-3 weeks

Frequently Asked Questions About Otoplasty

How Long Do Otoplasty Results Last?

Otoplasty results are generally permanent. Once the ears are reshaped or repositioned, they should maintain their new form indefinitely, providing long-lasting aesthetic improvement.

Recovery and Limitations

Patients can expect some initial discomfort managed with medication. Most individuals can resume normal activities within 7-10 days, with complete healing occurring over several weeks.

Dr. Pellegrino was running late, so my appointment was late. I was worried that it would be rushed and none of my questions answered. That was not the case. Not once did I feel like he was in a hurry. He explained the surgery, recovery, etc. I was blown away at the professionalism of everyone.
