Understanding Panniculectomy

A panniculectomy is a specialized surgical procedure designed to remove an excess "apron" of skin and fat hanging from the lower abdomen. Unlike cosmetic abdominoplasty, panniculectomy addresses medical concerns and functional limitations caused by significant skin redundancy.

Medical Indications for Panniculectomy

Typical candidates for panniculectomy include individuals who have:

  • Experienced substantial weight loss through surgical or lifestyle interventions
  • Developed excess abdominal skin post-pregnancy
  • Experienced medical complications from hanging skin

Panniculectomy Grading System

Medical professionals assess panniculus severity using a grading scale from one to five, with grade one extending to pubic hair and grade five potentially reaching the knees.

Surgical Procedure Details

Malcolm Z. Roth MD, FACS performs panniculectomy under general anesthesia, typically involving two strategic incisions: a vertical incision from the lower sternum to the pubic bone and a horizontal incision across the pubic area.

Procedure Specifics

  • Duration: 2-5 hours
  • Anesthesia: General
  • Location: Hospital or outpatient surgical center

Surgical Technique

During the procedure, the surgical team will:

  • Remove excess fat and skin through horizontal incisions
  • Pull down skin and fat from above the belly button
  • Reposition the belly button
  • Insert surgical drains to prevent fluid accumulation

Recovery Expectations

Recovery from panniculectomy is significant and requires patience. Patients can expect:

  • Initial hospitalization up to one week
  • 4-6 weeks before returning to work
  • 6-8 weeks for complete initial healing

Potential Risks

As with any surgical procedure, panniculectomy carries potential risks including:

  • Seroma formation
  • Skin separation
  • Reduced skin sensation
  • Scarring
  • Potential blood clot development

Insurance Considerations

Unlike cosmetic procedures, panniculectomy may be covered by insurance due to its medical necessity. Patients should consult their insurance provider for specific coverage details.

you're a mean person... you made me feel bad about myself and had very poor communication..not only did you talk to my family badly but you insulted me... I had a breast reduction and he made my nipples literally two different sizes and shapes and my scars are horrific...nobody go to this surgeon.

I hope one day you have empathy and that God gives you that magic wand so that people don't feel bad. Your work could have been better and you know it..💋

This office was horrendous. I waited over a month and many phone calls for MRI results They submitted paperwork to my insurance company that was wrong per my diagnosis therefore my claim was denied I went back and forth with them for over a year. The only time I heard back from them was with a quote for my surgery I definitely do not recommend them
